1884 yılında İsviçre, Rorscharch’ta Amerikan asıllı
bir ailenin çocuğu olarak doğdu. Oskar kazanan ilk aktör.
Jannings küçük bir çocukken ailesiyle birlikte Almanya, Görlitz’e
taşındı. Gençliğinde Berlin’de Max Reinhardt tiyatrosunda çalışmaya başladı.
İlk olarak 1914 yılında yönetmenliğini Louis Ralph’ın
yaptığı Passionels Tagebuch filminde rol aldı. Birçok filmde rol aldıktan sonra
1927 yılında Victor Fleming’in The Way of All Flesh ve 1928 yılında Josef von
Sternberg’in The Last Command filmlerindeki rolleri ile 1929 En İyi Erkek
Oyuncu oskarını kazandı.
1929 yılında Hollywood’a gitti. Ancak sessiz sinema
döneminin bitmesi nedeniyle buradaki kariyeri uzun sürmedi. Zira Jannings çok
zor anlaşılan bir Alman aksanı ile İngilizce konuşuyordu ve Jannings filmlerinde
dublaj yapılmasını istemiyordu. Bunun üzerine 1930 yılında Avrupa’ya döndü ve
Marlene Dietrich ile The Blue Angel filmini çevirdi.
3.Reich yıllarında Nazi propogandası yapan filmlerde rol
aldı. 1945 yılında Müttefikler Almanya’ya girince kendisinin Hollywood
bağlantısını ispatlamak için Oskar heykelini kullandı. Nazi filmlerini
çevirmeye mecbur kaldığını beyan etti. 1947’de Avusturya, Salzburg’a yerleşti
ve Avusturya vatandaşı oldu.
3 kez evlendi, 3 kez boşandı. Eşleri; Hanna Ralph, Lucie
Hoöflich ve Gussy Holl idi.
1950 yılında Avusturya, Strobl’da karaciğer kanserinden
öldü. Almış olduğu Oskar heykeli Berlin Filmmuseum’da sergilenmektedir. Hollywood Walk of Fame'de ismi yazilidir.

1889 yılında ABD, Ohio’da doğdu.
9 yaşındayken dul annesiyle birlikte San Francisco’ya
taşındı. 1906 San Francisco depreminden sonra iki hafta süreyle çadırda
yaşadılar. 1910 yılında Baxter vodvillerde rol almaya başladı.
Esas işi sigorta acenteliği idi. Sinema kariyerine 1914
yılında Her Own Money filmi ile başladı. 20’li yıllarda The Great Gatsby, Aloma
of the South Seas ve West of Zanzibar gibi unutulmaz filmlerde oynadı. 1930 yılında In Old Arizona filmindeki rolu ile En İyi Erkek Oyuncu Oskarını
kazandı. 1936 yılında Hollywood’un en çok kazanan aktörü olmuştu. Kariyeri
boyunca 109 filmde rol aldı.
1918 yılında sinema oyuncusu Winifred Bryson ile evlendi
ve ölünceye kadar evli kaldı. Yıllarca kemiklerindeki kireçlenme nedeni ile
ağrılarla yaşadı ve 1951 yılında ameliyat oldu. Aynı yıl zatürree geçirdikten
kısa bir süre sonra California'da öldü. Mezarı Glendale’de Forest Lawn Memorial Park’ta olup
Hollywood “Walk of Fame”de ismi yazılıdır.
